Winterizing your Storage Unit
Published on 2020-12-02
It is that time of year again in Northern Ontario and Old man Winter is on his way. Proper winterization will help your Storage unit and the items inside it stay in great condition during the Winter season. We're here to help by providing you with some useful tips on how to get started.

Invest in a Weatherproof Lock
Not all locks are meant to withstand the extreme cold. Some are susceptible to freezing and may become completely unusable. Weatherproof locks are only slightly more expensive than conventional locks but they will save you a lot of trouble and hassle during the colder months.
Water-Tight Bins
Cardboard isn't always effective at protecting your stored items which is why we suggest using water-tight plastic bins. These containers shield your belongings from pests as well as water damage.
Protect Items Most Affected by Cold Weather
Memorabilia Items
Any collectibles and sentimental items you are storing will most likely be the most sensitive to cold weather. Items such as documents, old photographs, and albums should all be wrapped in plastic and sealed tightly. This will help keep humidity out, which will stop the freezing that causes cracking, tearing, and general wear and tear.
Vehicles
Whether you’re storing ATVs, boats, lawnmowers, dirt bikes, convertible cars, or any other vehicle, make sure they are completely free of fluid before putting them into storage. Vehicles that are not flushed properly stand a far greater chance of having important interior parts cracking from the expanded liquid inside. Learn to flush your recreational vehicles yourself or take them into the shop to get it done professionally. Although protective covers are a great investment for vehicles, it's best to avoid plastic because it traps moisture resulting in mold. A better choice for a cover is a natural fabric like wool or cotton.
Electronics
Be sure to remove batteries from any electronic devices to avoid rust and corrosion.
Furniture
Many use their storage unit as a home for extra furniture. Make sure your wooden furniture is dry and wrap it in plastic wrap or a blanket to prevent mold and mildew during the colder months.
