Selling Old Items From Storage

Would you remember what was in your storage unit if you never set foot inside it again? There often comes a time in life when you come to the realization that you have too much stuff. While some people would consider it wasteful to simply discard unused items, others may not give it a second thought.  However, selling unused items can not only help declutter your storage unit but can even generate some additional income. We're sharing some ideas that may help you successfully sell your unused items:

“Storage/Garage” Sales

If you are planning on an in-person garage sale, organizing ahead of time is a great start.  Remember to check with the employees of your Storage Facility to ensure that they will allow a garage style sale held at your unit.  Some other useful tips would be:

  • Get the Word Out. If nobody knows about your sale then no one will show up. Tell your friends and family, or post online in local groups on social media.
  • Decide how you are going to price everything. When asked about the price of an item, you want to be able to give a firm answer. Next you will want to determine how you are going to handle transactions. Will it be cash only purchases?  If so, make sure you have some change on hand. What about payments through electronic means? Interact e-transfer is a great solution as well.

Selling Online

There are several online outlets that can help you sell your items such as:
  • Facebook Groups
  • eBay
  • Local Buy and Sell Websites
  • Local Newspaper Websites
When posting ads online for items that you want to sell, ensure you keep them very simple and to the point. Include a phone number or another way for people to contact you immediately.

Take Clear & Accurate Photos

Take detailed photos to accompany the listing. The more clearly someone can see what you’re selling, the more likely they are to get in touch.

Write Honest Descriptions

Your item descriptions should convince people that the item is a good buy, but be honest about its level of use, wear, and damage. Try not to use descriptions like “gently loved” — be descriptive about exactly how “used” it is and what condition it’s in. “Some scratches,” “worn around the edges,” as examples.

Large Items

Items that are big and bulky (exercise equipment, mattresses, furniture etc.) are best kept in the storage unit where you can arrange for people to come and view them.

Smaller Items

Take a car load of items from the storage unit back to your house and then sell those items on Social Media. Have buyers meet you at your home when it's convenient for you.

What if you can’t sell certain items?

Reach out to local charities, schools, shelters, and thrift stores and donate any items that you can not sell.
