Woman Deciding if she should Rent a Storage Unit for her Holiday Decor

If you're someone who loves to decorate during the Holidays like Clark Griswald, or you find you're in need of some extra space in the garage, Holiday decorations will often take up a lot of space. The solution? Why not consider renting a storage unit from Manitoulin Storage?  Whether it be lights, lawn ornaments, artificial trees, or any other Christmas items for indoor/outdoor décor, there are several benefits to renting a storage unit to house all your Holiday décor. We're sharing some of the reasons along with some tips for proper storage below.

What Size of Storage Unit will I need?

A smaller storage unit such as a 5x5 or 5x10 should be enough room for almost anyone who’s storing their holiday decorations.  A 5x5 is about the size of a large closet, so it has plenty of space for your decorations.  If you're a holiday decorating aficionado and you think you'll need some additional space, a 5x10 will be able to handle the additional load.

Using the Proper Boxes to Store Holiday Items

Whether the Christmas ornaments are family heirlooms, unique gifts, or crafts homemade by the kids, they should all be packed with care. Keeping your decorations in pristine condition is achievable if they are stored correctly.

You can purchase specialized holding boxes with dividers that separate your ornaments or wrap them individually with packing material to hold them in place. Bubble wrap, tissue paper, shredded paper, or foam are perfect packing materials.

Here are some additional suggestions to pack away your other Christmas Decorations:

Plastic bins should be used to pack away items such as candles, centerpieces, lights, linens, tree skirts, bead trims, wrapping paper, and inflatable yard displays.
Dust Covers, Bags, and Custom Boxes can be used to pack Holiday wreaths, garlands, baskets, and Christmas figurines.
Shrink Wrap or Tree Bags can be used to store Artificial trees.

Store your Christmas Lights Properly

Nothing can ruin holiday cheer more quickly than spending hours untangling your Christmas tree lights only to discover that they are inoperable after you have done so. You can avoid this predicament by using a wire hanger or wrapping your lights around they box they came in. A cord reel, which is often used to store extension cords, is another option you have.  After wrapping the lights, place them within a plastic bag, and store them in a plastic container.

Label your Boxes Accurately

Label each box or container with their exact contents and ensure you specify if they are fragile.  When storing your boxes, make sure you are not putting heavy boxes on top of fragile ones.

Out with the Old, In with the New

Use the Holidays as a time to clean out the old and make room for the new. Cardboard and original ornament boxes are usually good for a couple of years. If you notice mildew, rips, and tears, it’s time to discard and replace the boxes before putting them back into storage for safekeeping. Get rid of holiday decorations you don’t use or things that no longer work like crushed ribbons and bows, broken or worn light strands, and old gift bags.  If you have ornaments that are still in good condition but you have no desire to hold onto, consider donating them.
